Vía Carpe Diem, Tobazo, Canfranc, Huesca

Carpe Diem route, Tobazo, Canfranc, Huesca

To take the most of the last climbing days in the Pyrinees this year, Adrian, my dad and me decided to go with Flor and her dad to rock climb the route “Carpe Diem”, the new routes opened recently on the South face of Mt Tobazo.

Carpe diem is an 170 meters route 6a+, divided in 7 pitches. The route is not fully belayed, so it is neccesary to take cams with you.

Access: The route is located behind the military camp of Rioseta, on the buttress located on the left hand side of the route “Torrijo”.

1st Pitch (80 meters, II): We missed it, as it is really easy and there are no signs to know where the route begins.

2nd Pitch (35 meters, IV): Easy pitch with a IVº small wall, we put the gear on at the base of this wall.

3rd Pitch (30 meters, V+): Where the route truly starts!!! It goes over a few slabs of unreliable rock. The pitch is belayed with 2 pegs at the beginning and 2 bolts at the end, it is advisable to use the cams.

4th Pitch (25 meters, V+): Another slab pitch, in which it is better to double check the holds. Confy anchor on a slab with lots of loose rocks, you must be aware of not throwing any of them.

5th Pitch (35 meters, IV+): The hardest pitch of the route. It starts on a flat wall but with good holds above, it is easily climbable using the layback technique. Afterwards, the route carries on easy ground until it reaches to the base of a stepped wall with good holds but a lot of loose rocks. Confortable belay station on a slab. The bolts are quite far from each other, so the cams are very useful in this pitch.

6th Pitch (35 meters, 6a+): The main pitch, not only for its difficulty but also for its exposure. It starts on a vertical slab with few holds and belayed only with 3 bolts. As it climbs tends to go the right, to reach a crack belayed with only one piton. Once the crack has been climbed, there is a left traverse until reaching the bolt, where the route goes straight up tending to go a bit left to the base of a kind of bulge/roof, where the belay station is located. It is necessary to use the friends on the first wall, the crack and the traverse.

7th Pitch (40 meters, V+): The only hard part is the bulge/roof located just above the belay station, It is quite physical free climb, but there is a bolt in which a stirrup could be set to climb it easily. The rest of the pitch is walking on easy ground.

Descent: Following the boundary markers to the left, after passing a few screes, there will be a grassy hill to go down to get Rioseta´s path.

Vía Torrijo, Tobazo, Canfranc, Huesca

Torrijo Route, South Face of the Tobazo, Canfranc, Huesca

One more year, we went back to the South face of Mt Tobazo in Rioseta Canyon. This time we chose the route Torrijo, an alpine route with a maximun  rate of a “human 6b”. The route is completely belayed with bolts.

This time there were two teams, the hawaiian one formed by Diego, my Eduardo and me. And the squad formed by Flor, the admin of @pirineosadventures, her sister Paloma and Fernando, their dad.

Access: The route is located behind the military camp of Rioseta, on the left hand side of the route “Valle de Canfranc”. There is a ribbon with the name at the start of the route.

Vía / Route:

Largo 1 (60 metros, 3b): Gradas herbosas con alguna plaquita.
1st Pitch (60 meters, 3b): Grassy steps and some small slabs.

2nd pitch (60 m, 4a): Grassy steps at the beginning (2 bolts), followed by a very laid slab (4 bolts), it is located on the left of a dihedral.

Los 2 primeros largos son evitables / The first 2 pitches are skippable

3rd Pitch (35 meters, 5c): Lied slab at the beginning (1 bolt). Afterwards another slab that it looks easier than it is, really well belayed (7 bolts). Belay station at the base of a vertical dihedral.

4th Pitch (25 meters, 5b): It starts on a vertical dihedral with good holds followed by a small roof with good holds, well belayed and easily climbable with the help of a pine. The last few meters is a quite easy vertical slab.

5th Pitch (35 meters, 4b): Leave the belay station to the right, to get to an another slab, afterwards there is a grassy area until the belay station.

6th Pitch (45 meters, 6b or A0/5a): The pitch starts on a vertical wall of about 8 meters, where the CRUX of the route is. It is 6b, but it can be free climbed, in fact I did it, which means it is for HUMANS. On the other hand it can be easily aid climbed. Afterwards the difficulty drops a lot. The route continues on a dihedral (4a) followed by a few slabs (4b-5a). The last 15 meters are a grassy area.
7th Pitch (30 meters, 6a): Vertical wall that gets harder and harder. You have to trsut your feet. Beautiful pitch if you like slab climbing.

Largo 8 (20 metros, 4b): Largo vertical que no presenta ninguna dificultad. Reunión a la derecha de un pino.
8th Pitch (20 meters, 4b): Vertical pitch that is not a big challenge. Belay station on the right hand side of a pine.
9th Pitch (25 meters, 4b): Vertical steps at the beginning until reaching a grassy area bellow a roof. The route misses the roof going right.

Se pueden unir L8 y L9 / Pitch 8 and 9 can be linked

10th Pitch (30 meters, 4c): Grassy area that ends on a buttress with a vertical bulge.

Descent: Get to the road and walk on there until where the “green area” finishes, there is a boundary marker to show where the descending path starts.

Vía Tobazogan (Pico Tobazo (2049 m), Candanchú, España

Tobazogan Route (Tobazo peak (2049 m), Candanchu, Spain

We parked next to Rioseta barracks, fomr there to the start it is a 20 minutes walk.

Easily climbable apart from the 7th pitch (6a/6b) and the 8th pitch (6b+/6a), be aware of the rock falling if there are more climbers in the route, as there are a lot of loose stones.
